Academic Festival Overture (Full Orchestra) MD |
| |
Academic Festival Overture was written in 1879 when Brahms was given an honorary doctorate by University of Breslau. For the occasion, Brahms composed the overture. The work is built on themes taken from a memorable collection of German student songs; the songs are developed in a variety of tempos, styles, and moods. In the closing section, the melody is presented in a stately and dramatic manner, and the orchestra plays with full force, bringing the overture to a triumphant conclusion. |

Adagio and March (Occasional Oratorio) (SEE #35585) (String Orchestra) ME |
| |
Another beautiful sounding and playable arrangement from the masterful pen of Vernon Leidig. Students will enjoy the rich sonorities of the Adagio and rhythmic drive of the March. Rhythms are straightforward and range is limited to first position with more advanced fingering options. It is in the key of D major with a brief modulation to B minor giving some an opportunity to deal with A#'s, etc. This would be an excellent selection for a middle school/elementary string festival. |

Austrian Peasant Dance (Full Orchestra) MD |
| |
Written in 1889, Mahler looked upon his First Symphony as 'an adventure of the soul.' Mahler used the orchestral resources for alternating moods of happiness, sadness, tranquility and excitement. The second movement is scherzo-like, energetic and vigorous. It is designated by Mahler as an Austrian Peasant Dance. An excellent selection for contests and concerts. |

Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 (Third Movement) (String Orchestra) M |
| |
J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos are concerti grossi: a group of solo instruments set in unison and/or contrast with an orchestra. In 1719, Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg commissioned Bach to write music for his orchestra. Two years later, Bach completed a set of six concertos (now known as the Brandenburg Concertos). Imagination, beauty and originality marked these concertos. It is suggested that this arrangement of the third movement be performed following the arrangement of the first movement by Merle Isaac (#33581). |

Four Pieces for a Clock Tower (String Orchestra) M |
| |
These charming pieces, written by Haydn for the clock towers popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, have been expertly arranged to develop the classical playing style so often neglected in the younger orchestras. The added percussion parts (triangle, finger cymbals, and temple blocks) make this a great audience pleaser. |

Symphony in D Minor (first movement) (Full Orchestra) M |
| |
Cesar Franck's Symphony in D Minor is one of the favorites in the symphonic repetoire. The symphony opens with a Lento, a majestic introduction in which the principle subject of the movement is stated by the basses, a theme curiously reminiscent of a motive from Wagner. The Lento builds great dramatic suspense, growing in intensity and mystery until finally, the Allegro bursts forth triumphantly. Harmonically, today's listener is still charmed with Franck's chromaticism and his fluid use of tonaiity. From the melodic viewpoint, Franck's melodies are gorgeous and satisfying. |

Symphony No. 1: 2nd movement (Full Orchestra) M |
| |
A great classic for intermediate level orchestra! Ludwig van Beethoven first performed the First Symphony at the Royal Imperial Theater in Vienna on April 2, 1800. The Second Movement is loosely reminiscent of the slow movement of Mozart's G Minor Symphony. But, to use the term 'Mozartian' is to judge the work superficially. The movement begins to stir restlessly as it progresses. It is one of Beethoven's most singable and lyrical movements. |

Symphony No. 2 (Themes from 1st Movement) (Full Orchestra) M |
| |
The first movement of the second symphony was completed in 1871, and upon hearing the work, Rimsky-Korsakov called this symphony the 'Heroic'. With the heavy use of brass instruments, his impression was that it depicted the Russian Knights in all their grandeur and splendor. The symphony opens with a forceful and energetic theme for strings, quickly followed by the woodwinds in a lighter mood and tempo. The second theme, slower and more lyrical, appears in the strings and woodwinds. The movement closes with the heroic character of the first theme in a powerful and dramatic climax. |

Symphony No. 3 (second movement) (Full Orchestra) M |

Symphony No. 3 was composed in 1883 and first performed that same year in Vienna. The second movement is a rather quiet Andante and one of the most lyrical works that Brahms ever composed. It Is elegant and romantic in nature with two beautiful contrasting melodies. |

Symphony No. 3, Adagio (Full Orchestra) M |

Vernon Leidig has captured the drama and majesty of the original in this arrangement for full orchestra. Although technically easier, musically the piece can be a challenge to any group. |

Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Fourth movement (Brahms) (Full Orchestra) MD |
| |
Brahms composed his fourth symphony during his stay in the Austrian Alps in the summers of 1884 and 1885. Realizing the tone of the entire symphony was one of seriousness, Brahms broke tradition by casting the fourth movement, the finale, in the form of a chaconne or passacaglia. The theme, which he took from the chaconne in Bach's Cantata No. 150, Brahms constructed a monumental and powerful set of 34 variations, of which this arrangement includes 16 and the coda. |

Symphony No. 4: Finale (Full Orchestra) MD |
| |
The Fourth Symphony is a lyric poem for orchestra, more poetic in content than Schumann's prior symphonies. The theme of the introduction to the Finale asserts itself in a passage of surprising grandeur. Schumann's versatility and agile romantic lyrical themes in the strings and woodwinds are contrasted by powerfully majestic themes for full orchestra. The movement is deeply poetic, expressing varying moods: tenderness, passion, intensity, and drama. |

Symphony No. 5, 2nd Mvt. (Permanently Out of Print) (Full Orchestra) M |
| |
Even though Schubert was only 19 years old when he wrote his Symphony #5 (1816), he was already a master at writing melodies of a tender and melodious nature. The second movement expresses his lyrical and "song-like" character. The expressive imitation between strings and woodwinds adds interest and balance to this movement. |

Symphony No. 6 (Pathetique): Introduction and March (Full Orchestra) MD |
| |
Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tschaikowsky wrote his sixth symphony during the last year of his life. The sixth is said to be Tschaikowsky's greatest symphony, as well as his most popular; it is also the most celebrated symphony in all Russian music. Tschiakowsky said in a letter to his publisher, 'On my word of honor, never in all my life have I been so satisfied, so proud, so happy in the knowledge that I have written a good work.' |

Symphony No. 7, 2nd Mvt. (Full Orchestra) M |

This wonderful set of variations was encored at its first performance, a compliment rarely accorded to slow movements. With its serene and solemn dignity, it has been likened to a procession through the catacombs. Minor changes in instrumentation have been made here to make this treatment of Beethoven's masterpiece very accessible to the more advanced student orchestra, while still sounding very close to the original. |

Theme and Variations: based on a study by Kreutzer (Full Orchestra) ME |

Rodolphe Kreutzer's (1776-1831) fame as a composer rests on his 40 Etudes for violin, acclaimed as one of the great works in violin-studies literature. The study here presented is from that group of Etudes. Adding to the recognition factor of this Etude is that the great American comic Jack Benny, himself an amateur violinist, frequently would perform parts of this Etude on his many radio and television programs - to the delight of his audiences. |
