Deborah Monday, currently teaching in the Logan City School District Orchestra Program, works with 4th through 8th grade students in seven schools. A cello/bass specialist, she received her B.M.E. from Florida State University with an emphasis in strings and an M.M. in composition from the University of Alabama. She began working on a D.M.A. in composition at Louisiana State University while teaching in Baton Rouge.

Deborah is an active bass performer and private teacher. She has served as adjunct bass instructor at Utah State University for several years and has been on the faculty of the ASTA with NSOA "Bass Fest" for three years.

Ms. Monday has published a number of pieces for string orchestra with several leading educational music publishers. She co-authored the "Strings Extraordinaire" collection and has presented various clinics at Music Educators' Conferences. In 1999 she was named the Utah ASTA with NSOA Elementary Teacher of the Year.

	Here’s another incredible work from the pen of Deborah Baker Monday. It’s a colorful, exciting piece about the adventures on a British ship dating back to the 16th century. Adding to fun are parts for triangle, tambourine, and bass drum. The Arethusa is correlated to Artistry in Strings, Book 2, Unit III.
43631	Arlesienne Suite No. 1: Carillon (String Orchestra) M
	The Carillon is represented in the music with a constant three note motive. The original full orchestra version works well for string orchestra. The brilliant Allegro theme features the violins. The Andantino section which in the original is presented as a flute duet is handed to the violas, cellos and basses. Key and texture changes lead to a shorter statement of the Allegro which drives to a grand finish. Carillon is a wonderful example of Bizet’s writing.
43611	Autumn (from Four Seasons) (String Orchestra) E
	And now another masterpiece of Vivaldi's arranged skillfully by Deborah Monday. All solo parts from the original have been integrated into this string orchestra piece in D major. As in her rendition of "Spring" all the parts are interesting for the students. Rhythms are uncomplicated, bowings are simple, and all parts remain in first position except bass.
38809	Beach Spring (String Orchestra) ME
	Beach Spring comes from 'The Sacred Harp,' an American tunebook from 1844. The G Major opening theme, presented by the cellos, later modulates to C Major. First –Position parts throughout, and simple rhythms make this accessible for beginning-level string orchestras.
43622	Bonny Portmore (String Orchestra) ME
	'Bonny Portmore' is a grade 2 piece, all first position, in the key of G. It is a lyrical tune which offers students the opportunity to play in an expressive and legato style. The melody appears in all parts except bass, but the bass part is very important and kept active.The arrangement has appealing harmonies for students and motivates them to focus on tone and good bowing technique. They will not grow tired of this piece as you encourage them to play with deep feeling and expression. It is quite lovely and will be enjoyable to students, teachers, and audiences.
37692	Brahms Interlude (from Rhapsody in b, Op. 79 No. 1) (String Orchestra) M
	This beautiful interlude from Brahms Rhapsody in b minor includes simple melodies that are passed among all instruments and harmonized in parallel 3rds and 6ths. Repeated eighth note accompaniment with some ties drives the piece to dynamic extremes. Includes an optional Violin 3/Viola T.C. part.
37707	Burgundian Carol (Sing We Now of Christmas) (String Orchestra) E
	This arrangement is in a non-traditional style. The harmonies are fresh and very pleasing to the ears of students and audiences of today. The percussion can add an exciting dimension to the performance but the music itself has integrity and great rhythmic drive. The melody is given to all instruments in one place or another.

	Winner of the 2006 ASTA Merle J. Isaac Composition Contest! Loosely based on the Gregorian chant, 'Ubi Caritas,' this glorious work is driven by strong rhythms and rich harmonies.

	Great fun to play - great fun for the audience! This traditional folksong from Quebec is remarkably similar to the famous Can-Can and may be the source for Offenbach's greatest hit! Played at a lively tempo, this tune takes all your players up and down the D scale, gives each section a chance to shine, and even offers an opportunity for (optional) singing! An ideal opener or encore!
35533	Conquistador! (String Orchestra) ME
	A dramatic work with a hint of romance, Conquistador! depicts the life and adventures of the Spanish explorers. Life on the trail is conveyed through tension and motion; it is achieved with repeated note passages in the natural A minor key with rising and flowing eighth notes. A softer, more lyrical section represents the restful time for the Conquistadors, while a gentle, underlying Latin rhythm keeps the pulse alive. Students will really love the excitement of this music and teachers will appreciate how much expression can be achieved.

	An Artistry in Strings Concert Selection. Correlated with Book 1, this piece is accessible to first year players. Filled with excitement and drama, students will enjoy creating a story to match the music they play.
37743	Deep Sea Fandango (String Orchestra) ME
	This grade 1+ piece provides an excellent opportunity to feature low strings, while giving all students a fun part to play. A perfect training piece for F naturals and simple 2-note slurs, this will be a winner with students and audiences alike. An optional piano part is included, as well as 3 copies of the 3rd Violin/Viola T.C. part in each set.
43632	Deux Danses de la Renaissance (String Orchestra) ME
	The two dances presented in this arrangement compliment each other making for an exciting performance piece. The first dance 'Joyeux' uses the theme made famous by Peter Warlock in 'Capriol Suite.' The second dance is the popular 'Branle de Champaigne' by Claude Gervaise. These Renaissance themes make an excellent festival or contest piece. Conductors may want to add percussion instruments such as tambourines and drums to add variety in a concert.

	Pure beauty and emotion! Eighteenth Variation was used as the love theme in the movie Somewhere in Time. The optional piano part will enhance this wonderful arrangement.
37694	Elizabethan Madrigal, An (Now is the Month of Maying) (String Orchestra) ME
	Now Is The Month Of Maying by Thomas Morley is presented here for grade 2 string orchestras. Written during the Elizabethan era, this madrigal was one of the most popular of its time. High and low instruments take turns playing the beautiful melody while accompanying parts use a variety of devices – pizzicato, imitation, and counterpoint – to keep the sound fresh. An optional piano part is included.
37693	Emperor Waltz op. 437 (String Orchestra) E
	The 'Emperor' is probably the grandest of all the Strauss waltzes. All of the themes are represented in this grade 2 arrangement. Students will enjoy sharing the melodies and helping to create a dazzling performance. An optional piano part is included, along with 3 copies of the 3rd violin/viola T.C.

	This beautiful and exciting arrangement features two Irish tunes which offer an opportunity for lyrical expression and strong fiddling. Parting Glass is a lovely air traditionally sung as a farewell to good friends at the end of an evening or before a long journey. This string setting offers melodic material to all voices, and the richest ranges of each instrument are utilized so that the expressive possibilities are maximized. The fiddle dance of Collin’s Reel is great fun to play and contains a slow accelerando throughout, creating a very fast and furious ending. Perfect for festival or concert performance.

	Students will recognize the two themes contained in this overture that has been popularized in commercials and movies. The exciting "Rossini crescendo" is well represented, and themes feature a humorous interplay between D minor and D major. All parts have thematic interest in this selection, making it a great concert or festival choice for grade 3+ groups.

	This favorite holiday spiritual has a definitive jazzy feel. Fun for players and listeners, it's a must for your next holiday concert. This arrangement is set in the key of G and includes an optional piano part.
33975	God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen (String Orchestra) E
	This is a completely unique arrangement of the traditional English carol. A strong rhythmic figure dominates the accompaniment which includes a fun optional drum part. The melody is shared by all instruments. The tune is then introduced in a canon, creating momentum which builds to an exciting finish. Students will enjoy the rhythmic drive of this piece and teachers will appreciate that it is so easily accessible to young players. It will add great variety to any holiday performance!

	With form and texture that remain very true to the original, the keys of e minor and d dorian serve to make this arrangement “student friendly.” First violin solo includes 3rd position while the second solo only requires 1st position. Also works well with small groups.

	Neil Gow (1727-1807) was a famous fiddle player and composer from Scotland. It is said that in 1805 Neil was so grief stricken at the death of his second wife that he stopped playing his fiddle. His friends convinced him to pick it up again and the first thing he played was this lament.

	This powerful grade 4+ string arrangement of the popular tone poem by Mussorgsky makes for a great festival selection. Different string articulations are employed to achieve orchestral color, and all parts share melodic material and chromatic passages.

43629	Scheherazade, Tales of (String Orchestra) M
	This arrangement of 'Scheherazade' offers students a musical 'short story' of the original (under 5 minutes in duration). The major themes of the orchestral suite are included without the long, complex development sections. There Is a dramtic flow from the opening 'allegro frenetico' into the famous lyrical tune of the 3rd movement and then to the exciting conclusion. The grade level is only 2.5 but the dramatic effect seems much more difficult and mature. This would be a great piece for festival.

	Translated from the South African Zulu language meaning "We are marching or We are singing", this folk hymn's melody in G Major appears in all string parts. Presented as a round, accompanied with a rock style bass line; a key change to D Major keeps the excitement rolling to a grand finale reminiscent of gospel music.

	This arrangement by Deborah Monday offers a new mix of some attractive and unique tunes from the rich culture of Eastern Europe.
