| Description: In Grainger's own words: 'This piece is based on a little tune I made on a three days' walk in the Scottish Highlands (in 1900) as a hummed accompaniment to my tramping feet. It was worked out and scored in 1905.' Originally, the tune was dished up for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon) and solo piano. Years later, versions for piano duet and symphonic wind choir surfaced. The sumptuous harmony and delightful contrapuntal interplay of this inspired work makes it eminently suited to the resources of the string orchestra. All moving lines should be brought to the fore, and dynamic and tempo markings should be strictly adhered to. |
