| Description: The beautiful and highly evocative lyricism of James Agee's poem 'Sure on this shining night' was provided with an equally moving musical setting for soprano vioce and chamber orchestra by Samuel Barber in 1941. The premise behind Barber's composition is a dialogue between soloist and various wind colors (sometimes oboe, sometimes horn), the intent of which is to further emphasze the emotion and expressive content of the melody and lyric. Solo violin is assigned to the original soprano line in this arrangement for string orchestra, and it would seem appropriate to feature the soloist in front of the ensemble. The dialogue, or 'response' (often canonic in nature) is offered to solo viola. |
