| Description: Brahms composed his fourth symphony during his stay in the Austrian Alps in the summers of 1884 and 1885. Realizing the tone of the entire symphony was one of seriousness, Brahms broke tradition by casting the fourth movement, the finale, in the form of a chaconne or passacaglia. The theme, which he took from the chaconne in Bach's Cantata No. 150, Brahms constructed a monumental and powerful set of 34 variations, of which this arrangement includes 16 and the coda. |
