| Description: This is a lively traditional choral-dance which is typically performed by women at various festivals throughout the year. Rimsky-Korsakov was particularly fond of these choral folk-dances. Numerous examples can be found in several of his operas, including The Snow Maiden, and The Maid of Pskov, and in his orchestral works such as the Sinfonietta on Russian Themes. The setting here, presumably of a Christmas-themed melody, is reminiscent of his "Dance of the Tumblers" from the Snow Maiden. |
